Junior Doctors Industrial Action July 2023

The BMA, the British Dental Association, and the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association have announced that there is to be further industrial action to be undertaken by junior doctors (including GP Trainees) in England. A 120 hour continuous walkout will take place between 07:00 on Thursday 14 July and 07:00 on Tuesday 18 2023.

The BMA and BDA have also announced that consultant doctors and dentists will be taking strike action for 48 hours from 07:00 on Thursday 20 July until 07:00 on Saturday 22 July.

For general practice this means that GPSTs and FY2s will be away from work. Please bear this in mind when planning rotas, remembering that all trainees are considered as supernumerary and on the assumption that all GPSTs and FY2s will be absent for the full 72 hours of the strike.

Practices should not ask any juniors in your practice if they will be participating in the strike, or if they are BMA members. Only the direct employer – the hospital trust on behalf of HEE – are able to ask this. We are aware that some local trusts have asked GP practices to check with trainees on their behalf; please note practices have no right to do this and the LMC would advise against this as it may affect the relationship between the practice and the trainee.

Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership have published a summary of key messages for primary care which can be downloaded here.

Guidance for practices

The BMA has published guidance for practices on managing the impact of the strike action.

Guidance for Junior Doctors

The BMA has also updated its Junior Doctors’ guide to strike action which includes advice and FAQs.

Doctors taking part in the industrial action should not picket outside their practice, as that is not their employer, but may wish to join protest groups near local Trusts or their lead employer. By law a maximum of 6 persons can picket at the entrance to a workplace, but others can visit to show support or hold protests nearby.

If practices or juniors have any queries about the industrial action please contact us via humberside.lmcgroup@nhs.net.
